Tandem
NYRA is a network made up young researchers. Coming from different research contexts- privileging the use of English or of French and working at home (African students) or abroad (European students) - we encounter different difficulties. Collectively we are trying to respond to these difficulties by putting together a bilingual bibliographic database and pages dedicated to upcoming events and employment and scholarship opportunities for young researchers. We can also support one another individually through putting ‘tandems’ into place, on the one hand between students in Africa and in Europe (bachelor and master students) and young researchers and on the other hand between young researchers working on similar themes.
What is a tandem?
Each tandem is made up either of a student and a young researcher or of two young researchers working or interested in similar research topics. The two partners keep in contact either through email or through the forum on the website.
Two different tandem models are proposed:
Tandem 1: between student and young researcher
The role of the young researcher
> To provide the student with relevant references (books, articles, research reports etc)
> To help the student with choosing a research theme and constructing a research question
> To advice the student on fieldwork methods
> To give advice on how to fill in applications (for scholarships, higher education programs, courses etc.)
>To read and comment student papers, research projects etc
>To use the NYRA website as a resource
The role of the student
> To enter into a productive dialogue with the young researcher
> To specify his or her specific needs > To use the resources on the NYRA website >To keep the young researcher up to date on new developments of relevance to his or her research
It is up to each partner to express what he or she is ready to give and what his or her needs are, these are only some suggestions.
Tandem 2: between two young researchers
As PhD students or young researchers we can also support one another individually in a tandem relationship which will allow for exchanges on research questions or the sharing of texts between anglophone and francophone students.
How to get involved?
If you want to get involved either as a young researcher or as a student send an email with the following details to tandem@nyranet.com.
> name
> research interests (past, present and future)
> region or country of research > country of residence
> academic qualifications
